36 Hours in Torshavn

For some reason, you find yourself with 36 hours to kill in Torshavn, the capital of the remote Faroe Islands. This tiny city has a lot to offer and surprisingly, could keep you busy for a few days. While it is certainly out of the way, Torshavn has a lot to offer considering how small and remote it is. Here are the best things to do if you have 36 hours in Torshavn.

Colorful houses in Torshavn

Breakfast at Astaklokken - We found out about this place through searching for breakfast spots on google. Set in near Reyn Old Town, Astaklokken is a very cute cafe style breakfast spot inside of a traditional looking Faroese home. The food and coffee were excellent and the setting was exactly what you’d expect from a Faroese restaurant (in the best way). Definitely try the waffles here if you happen to stop in!

Svartafoss Waterfall

Svartafoss Waterfall - Torshavn has a great nature preserve that sits within the city. It's an excellent place to walk around during the many overcast days that frequent the area. Within the nature preserve is Svartafoss Waterfall. Not the most impressive waterfall on the islands, but still a great place to venture to if you want to get away from people for a little bit.

Coffee and Pastries at Kaffihusid

Cafe - Kaffihusid is a great place to stop by for a cafe style meal. They serve coffee, various drinks, sandwiches, and desserts. Set along the port of Torshavn, it’s a cute spot to stop for an hour or so if you want something more lowkey and less expensive. We had some delicious cheesecake, a nice chai latte, and some macarons!

Museums - We went to two different museums during our time in the city. First, we went to the National Gallery of the Faroe Islands. It’s a small museum, but very interesting if you are enthusiastic about art! The various works give a great glimpse into the everyday life of the Faroese people both past and present. In total, it took about an hour for us to see everything the Museum had to offer. Additionally, we went to the Faroe Islands National Museum. Larger than the National Gallery, the National Museum offers a glimpse into the past of the Faroe Islands. From traditional clothing and lifestyles, to religious artifacts and skeletal remains, there is something for everyone here. To get through the museum, it took us about 2 hours.

Shopping - Now, you can find cool shops in almost any city across the world. We wanted to find some traditional sweaters to bring back to the states because who doesn’t want a Faroese wool sweater? Across Torshavn, there are multiple stores that sell sweaters, so pop into all of them to see the various colors and designs! Our favorite shop was Ullvøruhúsið. The designs and colors were great and the shop owner was super friendly!

Appetizers from the 7 Course meal at Katrina Christiansen

Dinner - There is no shortage of options for food in Torshavn. We went to Katrina Christiansen for their 7 course meal and were blown away by how good it was. Much like Astaklokken, KC felt like what a Faroese restaurant should be. The decor was great, food was incredible (the shrimp toast was easily the best thing we ate on our entire trip). Katrina Christiansen has two different dining sessions during dinner that are a bit limited so make a reservation in advance.

Other things of note - There are various shopping centers and other activities within the city. In the heart of town, the Visit Torshavn center has lots of information about various activities you can do.

While it is out of the way, Torshavn and the Faroe Islands have plenty to offer. Whether you are just stopping over for a few days or looking for an extended holiday, consider these tiny islands as a place to visit.
